June is Home Safety Month

During June, the Home Safety Council (HSC) is working to educate and motive individuals and families to take actions to increase the safety of their homes and living space. The leading cause of home injury is falls. Individuals who are elderly or who have a disability are at higher risk for falls. Take a moment to walk through your home and identify and fix potential fall hazards.

  • You can do this by looking for and following these simple steps:
  • Handrails on both sides of the stes
  • Lights on the top and bottom of stairs
  • Tape down or remove small rugs
  • Install nightlights in bedrooms, halls, and bathrooms
  • Wipe up spills as soon as they happen
  • Install grab bars in tubs and showers
  • Keep sidewalk, stairs, and halls free of clutter
  • Fix broken or chipped sidewalks and steps
  • Add lights to all entrances and exits
